Laser Tweezer Control of Lipid Vesicle Shapes
Students: S.Pfisterer,  Collaborators: W.Losert, UMD

beads and cellsFeedback control of lipid vesicle shapes by real time actuation of beads with laser tweezers. Long term goal is to infer properties of living cells in real time by interrogating cell behavior with a variety of control inputs.

Feedback will allow us to gently manipulate cells, accurately probe their mechanical properties, and disprove or validate mathematical models of cell membrane behavior (the last item is required to validate membrane models that include mechanical changes caused by chemical stimuli – as needed for drug target studies).
